Our niece Megan Samuelson and Tom Haines got married today and thanks to Jim Seamans I managed to add a river in the morning while the wedding preparations were underway. Dad and Brian joined the fun catfishing below the Caralville Dam in Cedar Rapids - the halfway milestone on my sixty river quest. Jim had planned on fishing Cedar River as well but recent rain made for a muddy access. We managed to catch a few lunch size Flathead's using chicken liver for bait - yummy! The Iowa River reminded me of the lower Grand River back home.
The wedding was held in the country where local artisan Dick Schwab has built some amazing round stone barns. A great setting for a picture perfect wedding that everyone thoroughly enjoyed - from the fiddle music to the roast pig, and of course the country touches on everything courtesy my sister Carol and the Samuelson crew. One of the many highlights of the ceremony occurred when Megan's brother Scott (philosopher, poet, and damn good bread maker) read the following poem he penned for the occasion. There wasn't a dry eye to be found.
Wedding Song
Tonight we have a hog roast
And drink deep of the wine,
And all our seven ages dance
On the feet of friends and kin;
For today the world is made
Out of a yes and a yes
The bones dissolved at our taproots
Once saw fit to bless
For children to cry into
A home securely built,
Where every night two dreams begin
Under a single quilt.
Love is the mystery
That one day to a stone
One of you will stoop and whisper:
I am coming soon.
