#22 Pere Marquette - Middle Branch, Michigan

My last trip to the trap was during the salmon run. I spent a good hour then trying to coax one of the migrating monsters to strike to no avail. The trap is working well as evidenced by the piles of sand along the bank. The river below the trap is in pristine condition with many holes and gravel runs holding good numbers of eager junior steelhead. The old decaying structure placed in the river by TU still benefits the fishery. This narrow river is cold and clear which requires a stealthy approach to avoid spooking the fish. Cloudy wet weather would be ideal for fishing here, with the added benefit that the trap's pesky deer flies might be subdued. Jon Damon walked in with me not intending to fish, taking his rod along "just in case." He is familiar with the stream and walked me down to a good spot to fish back upstream. The stretch brought several of the feisty steelhead to hand. As I approached the trap I found Jon eagerly casting to some trout holding in its deeper water. We vowed to come back another day.

Weather: 70s and Sunny
