#5 Colorado River, Arizona

Our trip west included 3 nights in Sedona at the L'Auberge on Oak Creek, 2 nights at the Cliff Dweller's Lodge, and then on to see the Grand Canyon followed by 2 nights in Vegas. The highlight of the vacation was a guided trip down the Colorado River below Glen Canyon Dam in stunningly beautiful Marble Canyon near Lee's Ferry. Our host and river guide was owner Terry Gunn - http://www.leesferry.com/. He started the trip by informing me that there were good drifts, poor drifts, and perfect drifts - and only a perfect drift catches fish in this crystal clear water. He used 5x leader with 7x tippet. The line was rigged with two micro-flies spaced about 12 inches apart. Add another 12 inches or so to the split shot. A yarn strike indicator was placed 2x the water depth up the leader. The biggest challenge for me was learning to set up the drift with a proper mended line followed by a quick release of slack line. In spite of the cold front that had moved through the day before, I still managed to catch fish. I learned some new tricks midge fishing to sited fish. Margie and I thoroughly enjoyed this expertly guided trip up and down the Colorado River above Lee's Ferry.
Weather: 40-50 degrees, rain, sleet, sun, light wind
