Note: Several readers have asked if Steelhead are able to migrate up Swan Creek. I went back to Jim Bedford's book and he did not refer to a migratory fishery, although the stream is open all year. Looking at the map I do not see an obstruction up to the dam at 118th Ave, but there could very well be a blockage somewhere downstream. A week earlier I had a report of Steelhead being caught in a small tributary of the Kalamazoo River below Allegan in the State Game Area. I assumed it was Swan Creek, because neither Sand Creek nor Bear Creek are open. Also, its blue designation in the regulations leads me to believe that steelhead and salmon run the creek or some portion of it.

Looks like a nice little stream but cold. I've never heard of Swan Creek... it has Steelies? Where in Michigan is it?
As the crow flies Swan Creek is only a mile or two southwest of the Allegan Dam and is listed as a "blue" river in the fishing regs. I read about it in Jim Bedford's Fly Fisher's Guide to Michigan. 198th Avenue passes over the small dam you see in the photo. The creek looks like it would be very good fishing at higher spring flows for Steelhead, although actually landing a fish could be tricky. It eventually flows into Swan Marsh and then the Kalamazoo river. When I have the time I would like to walk it all the way to the marsh.
Nice river and blog.
Make no mistake, this is no river. It is a creek. It is a wonderfully beautiful place, 10 minutes from my house, and it can be over run with spin fishers that are not so nice.
